Discovering Our World Through Documentary and Writing
“Young Journalists” Project
Over the course of one month, a group of young teenagers watched a wide range of science and nature documentaries. The films took them on a journey across planet Earth, revealing fascinating aspects of human, animal, and plant life. Through these stories, the participants expanded their knowledge, developed their curiosity, and gained a deeper appreciation of the natural world.
As they watched, the teenagers practised taking notes, learned new vocabulary, and improved their writing skills with the help of Great Writing, published by National Geographic. The book guided them in writing strong paragraphs, organising their ideas, and structuring their texts clearly and effectively.
The participants also stepped into the roles of leading journalists from the United Kingdom and the United States. They wrote their own articles as if they had witnessed the remarkable events described in the documentaries themselves. This creative approach helped them develop their imagination, strengthen their descriptive writing, and express ideas with greater confidence.
Their mentor, Mr Huw Jones, supported them throughout the project and collected all of their articles. The completed work was brought together in a booklet, with a copy provided to each teenager who took part.
In September, the young writers will share their articles with other teenagers of the same age. They will also have the opportunity to watch some of the documentaries and explore the inspiring stories behind the articles.
