Learning from the Land: North Star Children Discover the Joy of Organic Farming at Biotiful Farm

During June and July 2026, our children visited Biotiful Farm every Friday as part of an ongoing educational association. Through organic farming workshops, creative activities, healthy cooking, music, poetry, and reading, they learned about nature, food, literacy, and the importance of sharing knowledge across generations.

Biotiful Farm, located near the village of Rosen in the Burgas region, is a permaculture farm and educational space where children and adults can explore nature and learn through practical activities. The farm describes its work as encouraging children to play outdoors, learn from the natural world, and develop a deeper understanding of nature. [biotifulfarm](https://biotifulfarm.bg/)

Learning through creativity

At the farm, learning took place through play, imagination, and hands-on discovery. The children enjoyed working with natural materials and creating miniature farms of their own. They constructed hotels for insects, made figures from clay, and explored how simple materials from the natural environment could be transformed into something useful, beautiful, and imaginative.

They also learned about the journey from the soil to the table. The children prepared healthy pizzas using fresh ingredients and returned home with bunches of herbs. These activities helped them understand the importance of fresh food, careful cultivation, biodiversity, and responsible relationships with the land.

The regular Friday visits made Biotiful Farm more than a one-day excursion. It became an outdoor classroom where the children could return each week, build on what they had learned, and develop a stronger connection with nature.

Sharing knowledge and talents

The children were not only learners; they were also enthusiastic contributors. They enjoyed sharing their knowledge and talents with the members of the Biotiful Farm team, creating a warm exchange between the young visitors and their hosts.

During the visits, the children sang in Bulgarian, English, and Spanish, danced, and read poetry. Their performances brought together language learning, music, movement, and self-expression, showing how education can extend far beyond the traditional classroom.

Celebrating literacy

The children also celebrated the unique human ability to read and write. Together, they discussed the magic of reading and the power of creating texts for future generations.

One inspiration for these conversations was Carl Sagan’s writing about books, reading, and the transmission of human knowledge. In *The Path to Freedom*, co-written with Ann Druyan, Sagan reflected on how books allow us to learn from the past, encounter the ideas of people from different times and places, and participate more fully in society. The children considered how reading allows one generation to speak to another and how every written text can become a message carried forward through time. Their reflections connected the living world around them with the world of ideas: just as seeds can grow into plants, words and stories can grow in the minds of future generations.

Education for the future

Our visits to Biotiful Farm brought together environmental education, creativity, healthy living, language learning, literacy, and community. The children learned by observing, making, tasting, performing, asking questions, and sharing what they already knew.

We are grateful to the team at Biotiful Farm for welcoming the children and for creating an environment in which learning feels natural, joyful, and inspiring. Through our ongoing association, we hope to continue giving children opportunities to grow—not only in knowledge, but also in confidence, creativity, compassion, and care for the world around them.
